Shortages in laptops and desktops could possibly last all of 2021

Shortages in laptops and desktops could possibly last all year.

Anthony Spadafora over at Tech Radar reports supply chain shortages in laptops and desktops could possibly last until 2022.

He tells us getting your hands on a new laptop or desktop in 2021 could be slightly trickier as the market responds to a major surge in demand, experts have warned.

The huge growth in working from home and remote learning during the 2020 pandemic led to a massive increase in the number of laptops and desktops sold worldwide – but this growth could be stifled soon as demand outpaces supply, according to analysts.

While laptop and desktop sales have boomed during the pandemic, sales of smartphones declined as users turned to bigger devices with more screen real estate while working and learning remotely.

In order to meet the increased demand for PCs in 2020, PC vendors added suppliers, sped up shipping and showcased improved models set to launch next year. However, these efforts don’t seem to have been enough as many PC manufacturers are still months away from fulfilling outstanding orders.

According to Acer’s Pan-America president Gregg Prendergast who spoke with Reuters, the PC maker has been absorbing the added cost to fly laptops directly to the company’s education customers instead of sending these devices the traditional way over train or by large container ship. With assembly lines running behind though, some customers have been forced to wait up to four months to receive their shipments.

Vice president at analyst firm IDC Ryan Reith also pointed out how additional stimulus money for schools and businesses in several countries could mean PC and PC component shortages may last all the way until 2022.

This means that if you can continue using your existing laptop or desktop, you probably should as replacing them with a newer model or upgrading their components could remain difficult for the foreseeable future.

These supply shortages have been reported recently seem to be effecting big manufactures HP, Dell, Lenovo and Acer.

Eric Jhonsa over at The Street reported common Laptop and PC parts are also in short supply this year. Eric stated in a recent report CPUs and display panels are reported to be in short supply as remote work and learning drive a spike in notebook demand.

As consumers and schools keep snapping up notebooks, component shortages are once more becoming a problem for the PC industry.

The fulfillment team at Atlanta I.T. Service and other technology service partners close to us are stating they are doing their best to fill orders and confirms a record number of back orders already this year. Many ETA dates from distributors on these back orders is for spring and summer!
